Airport holds Big Green Week
31.10.09
Employees at East Midlands Airport have been working to reduce their environmental impact by changing the way that they work and live, as part of the airport's annual Big Green Week. Staff at the airport worked alongside on-site businesses and passengers, to promote work to reduce the company's environmental impact.
Staff were treated to a free Biker's Breakfast if they cycled to work, as well as the opportunity to have a free travel taster on one of the airport's Skylink buses. Passengers were able to learn about the airport's green initiatives at a roadshow held in the check-in hall. Exhibitors included North West Leicestershire District Council, who were promoting their Green Footprints campaign, and Energy Saving Trust who promoted green driver training to passengers and staff.
Departments at the airport were also encouraged to develop new and innovative ways to get the wider workforce engaged in environmental management through a departmental Carbon Wars challenge. Recycling projects included clothing recycling scheme, used stamp collection, jewellery repairs and collecting plastic milk bottles to create a recycled greenhouse at a local primary school.
Neil Robinson, Director of Sustainability, East Midlands Airport said: ‘Big Green Week is a great way for staff to think about their environmental impact in a fun, hands-on manner. We have had a great response from staff, on-site business partners and passengers and have seen the workforce really embracing energy saving, green travel and recycling, in addition to putting on their wellies to take part in planting sessions. We look forward to seeing staff continue to put these ideas into practice.’
