Airport opens 'changing places' room
30.11.11
East Midlands Airport, in conjunction with the Changing Places Consortium, has opened the first Changing Places toilet at a UK airport. It has been designed to meet the needs of passengers who have profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), or with severe disabilities, who need the support of at least one carer. It offers a safe and easy facility for them to use when travelling through the airport.
A group of organisations including Mencap, PAMIS, Nottingham City Council, Centre for Accessible Environment, Dumfries & Galloway Council, Valuing People Support Team and the Scottish Government formed the Changing Places Consortium in 2006. They have since campaigned for Changing Places fully accessible toilets to be installed in public areas.
Brad Miller, the Managing Director at East Midlands Airport, said: ‘As part of our commitment to improving the passenger experience, we continually look at the facilities we provide to ensure they meet the needs of our passengers. From the moment Changing Places approached us, we were happy to support their scheme. As an airport that caters for millions of passengers, it is essential that we work closely with such organisations, to provide a first class facility.’
