East Midlands has highest proportion of leisure travellers

East Midlands Airport has reacted positively to a survey from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that suggest the airport has the highest proportion of leisure passengers in the country.
In total 4.7m passengers passed through the airport last year, with a CAA survey suggesting that leisure was the main reason for travel for as many as 87.6 percent of them. This is a higher proportion than at other major UK airports such as Stansted and Gatwick, a fact that was welcomed by East Midland's managing director Penny Coates.
She said: 'The figures show that our hard work to offer our customers a wide portfolio of destinations from their local airport is paying off. During 2007, we have had month-on-month passenger growth. For the August bank holiday we had one of the highest year-on-year increases in the country.'
Alicante was the most popular destination for leisure passengers, followed by Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Dublin and Rome, the survey revealed. Business passengers, who account for 12.4 percent of passengers, picked Glasgow as the most popular route, followed by Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin and Amsterdam.
