Crackdown on airport taxis
28.09.08
Over 100 taxis and minicabs working at East Midlands Airport were checked by vehicle examiners to make sure they were operating legally and roadworthy in a crackdown this week. A spokesman for the airport said the aim of the operation was to reduce the number of unlicensed taxis at the hub.
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) carried out the operation in association with 14 local authorities from across the East Midlands. During the one-day crackdown three drivers were ordered not to use their vehicles for private hire until faults such as defective brakes and worn tyres were repaired.
Four drivers were told to fix faults, including as excessively tinted windows, and on five occasions, drivers were not displaying their licences. One driver was reported for summons for driving without a licence or insurance.
Sgt Stephen Smith, from Leicestershire Police, said: 'Our priority is to keep the public safe when getting a taxi to and from the airport. Passengers should be able to get into a taxi knowing that it is roadworthy and driven by someone who has a licence.'
