26.09.07
Passenger numbers at East Midlands Airport are up for the eighth consecutive month, with August passengers up 14.3 percent to 598,757 and year to date (January to August) up by 17 percent (to 3,651,451). Palma was the airports favourite European getaway destination in August, closely followed by Dublin, Alicante and Malaga.
In August domestic passengers were up by 4 percent to 67,835 - 11 percent of the total - whilst international scheduled passengers were up by 30.7 percent to 322,737 - 54 percent of the total. Charter passengers fell by 1.8 percent to 208,185 - 35 percent of the total - reflecting a continuing decline in the packaged holiday market.
A spokesman for the airport said that it is looking forward to a busy winter season with new routes including Goa, Scandinavian destinations of Copenhagen (Denmark), Oslo (Norway) and Stockholm (Sweden) and the winter ski destination Innsbruck.
