Wind turbines given green light
26.03.08
East Midlands Airport has been given permission to install four 31.5 metre wind turbines on its site. The decision by the North West Leicestershire District Council means that the airport will be the first in the UK to install permanent wind turbines, which are expected to be active from later this year.
The project is part of the East Midlands Airport's commitment to becoming carbon neutral from its ground operations by 2012, with the turbines expected to generate around 10 percent of the airport's energy. 225kw is expected to be produced by each turbine, saving around 850 tonnes of carbon a year.
Penny Coates, the airport's managing director, said: ‘We are delighted that the turbines are a step closer. They are part of our promise made in our Master Plan. In addition to the wind turbines, we have increased the proportion of energy that comes from renewable sources and introduced a number of environmental measures - including our 'green pier' - to reduce the impact on the environment.'
