Airport hotel sets new green standards
24.09.11
The new £22m, 218 bedroom Radisson Blu Hotel at East Midlands Airport has set a new environmental standard for hotels. Boasting an Energy Performance Certification rating of two, the new airport hotel is the most efficient of Rezidor's 400 European hotels. Its carbon neutral build also supports East Midlands Airport's aspiration for its ground operations to be carbon neutral by next year.
The construction rating for Energy Performance Certificate rates the hotel as ‘A+', with an 88% reduction in carbon dioxide compared to a traditionally built hotel. It is powered and heated by a tri-generation combined heat and power plant (CHP) powered by recycled oil previously used in the cooking of food, to provide both heating and cooling needs - with surplus power being exported to the national grid. Other environmentally friendly measures include rainwater harvesting, with a 62,500 litre underground storage surface water tank (SUDS), and motion sensitive lighting throughout.
The design of the new airport hotel reflects the theme of aviation, as well as references to the nearby National Forest. The theme of aviation is most obviously reflected in two, 5 storey aluminium clad ‘wings' and the hotel's entrance canopy. The 218 bedroom hotel includes eight executive suites, a full service restaurant and bar, conferencing facilities, function suite and full leisure and health facilities including swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms.
