Regional airports growing faster than London's big 5

22.09.07

Passenger growth at the UK's regional airports is outstripping the rise at the 'big 5' London airports, new figures have shown. The number of passengers flying from UK regional airports increased 4% to 98 million last year, statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) show. This represents a 42% share of UK passenger numbers.

Passengers at the 5 London airports - Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City last year increased by 3% to 137 million last year. In 2006 28% of the UK's passengers travelled from Heathrow, a decline of 3% compared to a year earlier. Gatwick, Stansted and Luton retained their respective 14%, 10% and 4% share of passengers, while Manchester saw a 1% decline to 9%.

In its latest annual passenger survey, the CAA also interviewed more than 200,000 passengers at 5 five London airports plus at Belfast City, Belfast International, Birmingham, Londonderry, Manchester and East Midlands Airports.

Dublin was the most popular destination for leisure passengers at the 5 London airports, followed by Edinburgh, New York, Malaga and Amsterdam. Edinburgh was the most popular route for business passengers, followed by Dublin, Glasgow, Amsterdam and Manchester.

Across the regional airports, Palma, Alicante and Malaga were the most popular international destinations for leisure passengers and Orlando the most popular long haul route. The most popular destinations for business travellers were Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin and London.

Business passengers accounted for 64% of passengers at London City, the highest proportion in the survey. This compared with 41% at Belfast City, 36% at Heathrow and 29% at Belfast International. East Midlands attracted the largest proportion of leisure passengers at 88%, compared with 87% at Londonderry, 83% at Gatwick and 82% at Stansted.

The most popular method of transport to most of the airports was by private car, used by 77% of passengers at Belfast International, 69% at East Midlands, and the lowest, 17%, at London City. London City also had the highest proportion of public transport users at 42%, while the lowest public transport usage was at Londonderry at 2%.
