Passengers and profits fall
20.08.11
Passengers and profits dropped at East Midlands Airport last year as the recession and ash cloud hit air travel. The airport had 400,000 fewer passengers in the year to March 2011, with 4.1 million people passing through the hub. Its profits dropped by £2.6 million to £7.1million with about £600,000 in revenue losses as a result of cancellations caused by the ash cloud crisis in April 2010.
The airport said in its annual report: ‘The aviation industry has experienced a challenging year, significantly impacted by reduced passenger volumes across all markets with further reductions as a result of the volcanic ash cloud experienced earlier in the year. Passenger numbers have increased slightly in the early part of 2011.'
