Rail station construction begins
21.12.07
Construction work started on a new railway station near East Midlands Airport this week. The £25.5m East Midlands Parkway station is set to open next December and will lead to reduced congestion in the region's city centres as well as offer a quick route to the airport.
Plans for the site, which is near junction 24 of the M1, close to the power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, were first drawn up almost 10 years ago. Since then there have been a series of delays and a public inquiry, however, construction work started yesterday.
The station will include 4 platforms, step free access, a station building with ticket office and 850 car parking spaces. Built to the latest environmental standards, it will be one of the most environmentally friendly stations in the UK, incorporating features such as ground water heating and grey water recycling.
It will allow passengers to come off the M1, drive to the station, which is around a mile or 5 minutes away, and hop on the train to London. It is likely to be served by at least 2 trains an hour to and from London St Pancras International. A shuttle bus will also operate from the station to East Midlands Airport.
