Construction starts on new airport hotel
20.07.10
Construction work has started on a new £22m four-star hotel near East Midlands Airport. The Azure Property Group will operate the 5-storey, 216 bedroom Radisson Blu hotel, which will create 150 jobs and is scheduled to open next summer.
The design will include a courtyard that references to the nearby National Forest, with timber features, as well as an aviation-inspired canopy. The northern side of the building will be clad in curved aluminium panels with flush windows and seamless joints similar to modern plane construction.
Developers hope it will be also one of the region's greenest hotels, using several sustainable construction techniques to deliver an 87% reduction in CO2 and supply up to 90% of the consumed energy from a renewable source.
