£3m to be spent on snow clearing equipment
20.01.11
East Midlands Airport is to spend £3 million on new runway snow-clearing equipment. Over the next 3 years the airport will replace and upgrade its ageing snow ploughs, and buy new snow blowers, gritters and tractor units.
The airport's chief executive, Brad Miller, said: ‘[The team] did a remarkable job keeping the airport open this winter - but they need the tools to continue to do the job.’ No flights were cancelled during December's snowfall, although some flights were delayed due to conditions at destination airports. In addition East Midlands took over 30 redirected flights from other snow-affected airports in the UK, including Gatwick, Birmingham, Heathrow and Manchester.
