Heavy snow closes runway

East Midlands Airport closed its runway for 40 minutes last night due to heavy snow. Four incoming flights were diverted to Birmingham or Manchester where the weather conditions were less severe.
An airport spokesman said the sheer volume of unforcast snow in a short space of time had meant it could not keep the runway clear, but that it opened after only a short delay.
