New flights between East Midlands Airport and Islamabad are due to take off today. To celebrate its first flights to Pakistan, which will operate via Sharjah in the Middle East, the hub has organised a special musical celebration.
The airport's check in hall will host a cultural music event today to see off the first passengers using the UK International Airlines (UKIA) flight. Penny Coates, managing director at East Midlands Airport, said: 'This flight is a fantastic endorsement of our first-class facilities and is a real coup for everyone involved. The service has generated lots of interest so far and we are sure the people of the Midlands region and beyond will make good use of it.'
UKIA, a new Sheffield based airline, plans to offer twice-weekly flights to Islamabad via Sharjah, (near Dubai) each Tuesday and Friday. A previously reported, the airline hopes operate flights from Gatwick, Manchester and East Midlands to Islamabad, Lahore and Sharjah. Future plans also include flights between the UK and Dhaka, Kathmandu, destinations in India and to Gambia in Africa.
