Traffic warning for this weekend

19.06.08

Large volumes of traffic is expected on the motorway and road network near East Midlands Airport this weekend, as the British Motorcycle Grand Prix takes place at Donington Park. The event, which runs from tomorrow (Friday June 20) to Sunday, is expected to attract up to 100,000 people across the 3 days - with 65,000 on Sunday.

The police have worked closely with the organisers of the event, the Highways Agency and East Midlands Airport to try to ensure that a comprehensive traffic management system is in place to minimise delays. The traffic plan is designed to make it easier for spectators to get in and out of Donington Park, and to reduce delays experienced by other road users.

Under the plan, car and motorcycle traffic will be separated, leaving the motorway at different junctions, to reduce congestion at junctions 24 and 23A of the M1. On race day (Sunday) a one-way system will also be in place on the A453 which runs past the circuit.
