Parcel bomb lucky escape
18.12.10
Bomb disposal officers had a narrow escape after loading the al-Qaeda ink cartridge bomb discovered at East Midlands Airport into a van to be transported by road to a laboratory in Kent, it has been reported.
The police are reported to have put the device in a van to be transported for further examination, because it was so sophisticated they did not realise it was explosive. It was to be taken to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Fort Halstead in Kent while it was still primed. Officers would have been on their way to the laboratory when it was timed to explode.
A police source told a newspaper that bomb disposal officers unwittingly disarmed it whilst examining it, and were only alerted later by officials that it was viable and could have taken down a plane.
