Two light aircraft were involved in a fatal mid-air collision over Staffordshire near East Midlands Airport at midday yesterday. Incoming flights were diverted to Birmingham Airport whilst outgoing flights were delayed after one of the planes made an emergency landing at the airport.
One of the two light aircraft landed safely at East Midlands Airport even though it had lost most of its' landing gear. The airport followed its full emergency procedures and the airport runway was blocked for around three hours. All three people on board were uninjured.
The other plane landed near in Rugeley, Staffordshire - around 25 miles away from East Midlands Airport - and there are believed to be two fatalities. Firefighters, who were called to initial reports of a grass fire, found the wreckage of the light aircraft. Air Crash investigators were at the site.
Nine flights were diverted to Birmingham Airport and two were cancelled while the runway was closed. It re-opened shortly after 15:00.
