Record 2007 and big passenger rise in December
17.01.08
A record number of passengers passed through East Midlands Airport last year. A total of 5,414,299 passengers used the airport, an increase of 14.5 percent on 2006, boosted by the launch of a number of new routes. December also saw passenger numbers rise for the 12th successive month, with 377,929 travellers arriving and departing, an increase of 16.7% over the same month in 2006.
Penny Coates, the airport's managing director, said: 'This record increase in passengers demonstrates the demand in the region for local access to air travel. I'm delighted with passengers response to the wide choice of destinations we are able to offer. The challenge for us is to build on this fantastic performance and to continue to deliver the services the region deserves.'
In 2007, East Midlands Airport added 5 new routes to its portfolio of European destinations with Ryanair - Cork, Tenerife, Belfast, Poznan and Alicante - and the Scandinavian airline Sterling launched flights to Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. The airport also saw long-haul services increase with the launch of Airtours charter flights to Jamaica.
