Big cigarette seizures
15.02.08
Over one hundred thousand cigarettes have been seized by customs officers at East Midlands Airport this week, Customs have announced. A family of Slovenian nationals, four women and three men, was stopped on Monday when they arrived from Prague with a total of 82,000 cigarettes. Two women from Sunderland, both aged 18, were also stopped this week as they arrived from Tenerife with 45,000 cigarettes. On the same flight, two men from Doncaster were found trying to smuggle in 32kgs of rolling tobacco into the UK.
John Macmillan, detection manager for HM Revenue & Customs at East Midlands Airport, said that the seizures combined would have resulted in a revenue loss of £34,000. He said: ‘These seizures show we have active and robust teams operating at the airport and will not hesitate to take action against those dealing in smuggled cigarettes. These cigarettes will be incinerated to make power for the national grid.'
