Airport bus link no longer needs public funding

The Nottingham Skylink bus will be operated as a commercial service by Trent Barton buses following the continued success of the airport link, My Nottingham reports. The service, which has been run by Nottingham City Council and East Midlands Airport, was launched in 2004 to provide a link between the city centre and airport. For the last 8 years the service has been jointly funded by the council and airport, and has benefited from £2.37 million of subsidies, with passenger numbers increasing to over half a million each year.
From March 25, Trent Barton buses will operate a commercial Nottingham Skylink service from Friar Lane and Broadmarsh Bus Station to East Midlands Airport via Long Eaton. The new service will remain largely unchanged and will continue to operate 24-hours a day, half hourly from 04:00 to midnight and hourly through the night, 7 days a week, and will take 55 minutes to reach the airport.
However, Trent Barton buses will use a different route between East Midlands Airport and the city centre to avoid the A453, which is likely to be adversely affected by congestion for around 3 years during the widening scheme. It means the service should be far more reliable over the coming years.
