Ash clound continues to disrupt flights
12.05.10
Safety rules governing flights in UK airspace have been eased following the Iceland volcano, the CAA announced today. The news came as flights between the UK and Europe, and transatlantic services, continue to be hit by the ash cloud. Passengers face more disruption today as the ash forced parts of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and the Canary Islands to close their airspace.
UK airports remain open today, but dozens of flights have been cancelled and delayed, even though the CAA has cleared the way for more flights by lifting the 60-mile no-fly buffer zone imposed around dense ash. Ryanair cancelled flights between UK airports, including East Midlands, and Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands due to the ash cloud.
A CAA spokesman said its decision to remove the buffer zone was taken after 3 weeks of evidence gathering. But both Ryanair and easyJet were been forced to scrap flights to Europe as the problems from the volcano continued. Airport operator BAA has also warned of delays and cancellation to transatlantic services. Both airlines and airports urged passengers to check updated information before travelling.
