Plane evacuated over fire alert
11.12.07
Over one hundred passengers were evacuated from an aircraft at East Midlands Airport on Sunday night because it was feared there was a fire on board. The Thomas Cook flight from Lanzarote was reported to be in trouble at about 18:05 as it moved into the airport's docking station shortly after landing.
An airport spokeswoman said a warning light in the cockpit indicated there was a fire on the plane. All passengers on the Boeing 757 were evacuated as soon it came to a standstill. Fire crews at the airport rushed to the plane and firefighters from Leicestershire were also put on alert, but none were needed.
The spokesman for the airline said that all of the passengers left the plane via the stairs and the emergency inflatable slides were not used. A search was carried out and there was no sign of a fire. An investigation is under way to find what caused the alert.
