bmibaby slammed over too small hand luggage cages

bmibaby has been charging passengers to put bags in the hold when they are small enough for the cabin, meeting the budget airline's own guidelines. A businessman enraged by having to pay extra for his hand luggage uncovered the mistake, which could mean thousands of passengers paid fees unnecessarily.
The Daily Mail reports that the measuring cages used at the gate at airports are smaller than the measurement guidelines on the airline’s website. Kiran Somaiya was travelling with the budget airline from East Midlands Airport to Amsterdam when he was asked to put his hand luggage in a measuring cage to check if it was small enough. He could not fit it in and was required to pay £30 each way, but when he arrived in Amsterdam he tried to fit his luggage into another cage and found it would fit easily.
It is also reported that the cages at the departure gates have rounded corners meaning some cases that pass the size test at check-in - using the airline's own cages - then do not fit at the gate, incurring charges. The newspaper reports bmibaby has admitted the problem and will change the small cages at its UK airports.
