Boom in fake goods
08.09.09
More than £1.6 million of counterfeit goods have been seized in four months at East Midlands Airport. Thousands of fake items, including Viagra pills, hair straighteners and tobacco, have been seized by UK Border Agency staff at the airport.
The value of counterfeit goods seized by officers between April and July is already the same as they had seized in the whole of the previous 12 months. Border staff say that the recession has created a boom in the counterfeit market, with people looking for a bargain, but not always getting what they expect.
