Council question flight noise fines
07.10.09
Leicestershire County Council says airlines that cause disturbance when they fly in and out of East Midlands Airport may not face big enough fines, the Leicester Mercury reports. The council has asked airport managers to prove that the penalty of around £1000 is enough of a deterrent.
The issue was raised are part of the authority's response to the airport's draft noise action plan. A council spokesman told the newspaper: ‘The plan restates the operation of the penalty scheme. Whilst some information has been given on the number of fines, there is no indication on whether the fines are a sufficient deterrent.'
Labour leader Councillor Max Hunt is calling on the council to reject the plan outright. He said: ‘There's a feeling that East Midlands Airport are simply ticking the boxes.‘
