17% of airport weighing scales inaccurate
07.08.08
Officers from Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service visited East Midlands Airport to check its baggage scales, and found that 17% were inaccurate, the Loughborough News reports.
The Trading Standards team wanted to make sure customers did not incur excess baggage charges because of scale inaccuracies and that there is no risk to passenger safety from scales giving a false low reading, leading to aircraft overloading.
During the recent visit officers found 17% of scales - 9 out of 52 - gave inaccurate readings, the newspaper reports. Three (6%) were so inaccurate that they needed to be withdrawn from use immediately. Of these, two scales were under reading and so weighing to the benefit of the consumer.
