6000 sign petition calling for more information on Air Ambulance
01.10.07
More than 6,000 people have signed a petition asking for information on the future of the air ambulance currently based at East Midlands Airport. As previously reported, it is due to move to the West Midlands in March because of a lack of funding. Residents say the service, which covers Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Rutland, is vital but they are not being consulted.
East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said discussions about a replacement service to cover the area were ongoing. A spokesman said: 'We are in discussions with alternative providers and West Midlands Ambulance Service has said the air ambulance will remain until March 2008. As far as we are concerned, the service will not cease.'
However Anne Bond, a voluntary petition coordinator, said people objected to being kept in the dark about EMAS' plans. She said: 'The petition says that we need air ambulance cover within the East Midlands, across Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland. It is time for EMAS to pull their finger out and let people know what is happening.'
Petitions from people in Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Rutland will be handed to EMAS on October 20.
