Airport reveals wind turbine plan
06.09.07
Plans to build the first set of wind turbines at a UK airport have been revealed. East Midlands Airport wants to construct four 31.5m-high turbines on its land in order to generate 10% of its energy.
The scheme is part of a plan by the airport to make its site operations carbon neutral by 2012. Other wind farm schemes near airports have been opposed because of fears that the turbines will interfere with air traffic control devices. However, officials said the proposed turbines would be located in an area away from air traffic control and other functional areas, and at least 800m from the nearest residential properties.
Advice has been sought from safety assessment company Qinetiq and the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure the safety of the plans ahead of the airport submitting the plans. It will now apply to North West Leicestershire District Council for permission to build the turbines, which would be installed by Lancaster-based Wind Direct.
East Midlands Airport managing director Penny Coates said: 'The turbines will be a welcome addition to our environmental measures. I hope that this initiative is something which the local community and indeed the region can feel proud of.'
