Air rage drunk jailed

A 50-year-old man has been jailed for 6 months for a drunken air rage attack on a flight from East Midlands Airport to the Gambia. Steven Pekar, of Burton-upon-Trent, hit a woman and tried to bite an off-duty police officer after drinking a bottle of vodka on the flight, Leicester Crown Court heard.
The ordeal for passengers and crew on board the Thomas Cook Boeing 757 continued on and off for almost 5 hours. About an hour into a flight in April last year Mr Pekar kicked the seat of the woman sat in front of him, and ran his fingers through her hair, before hitting her when she complained. He called her an ‘evil cow’ and she was forced to lock herself in the toilet to escape him.
He then threw a bottle of water across the cabin when flight attendants tried to calm him down, and also attempted to light a cigarette. When he was interviewed by Gambian police after being arrested when the flight landed, he accepted he had been drunk. He claimed he could not remember what happened on the plane as he was taking six different types of medication and should not have been drinking.
Mr Pekar, a forklift truck driver who was travelling with a male friend, was prosecuted under sections 60 and 61 of the Civil Aviation Act 1982. He admitted being drunk on an aircraft and was jailed for six months.
