Two men - one of them a 70 year old pensioner - were caught trying to smuggle 62,000 cigarettes into the UK via East Midlands Airport over the weekend.
The authorities swooped as the pair arrived at the airport on a flight from the Canary Isles on Sunday. The 70-year-old OAP and a man in his mid 20s, both from Sunderland, were stopped by Customs officers and the cigarettes were found in their luggage. The revenue loss on the huge haul would have been about £11,350.
John Macmillan, detection manager for HM Revenue & Customs at East Midlands airport, said that no arrests were made but investigations were ongoing. The cigarettes will be incinerated to make power for the national grid, he added.
