Nine airlines rewarded for meeting noise standards

Nine airlines operating from East Midlands Airport have been recognised for ‘exemplary performance’ against the environmental procedures imposed by the hub. BMI, bmibaby, easyJet, Star Air, UPS, Thomas Cook, Thomson, First Choice and Ryanair all achieved 'outstanding performance' against noise abatement measures during 2008, and received a certificate at the airport's annual Pilot Awards Ceremony.
The airport’s noise and track monitoring system checks the performance of all arriving and departing aircraft movements up to 30 miles from the airport. The awards were introduced 5 years ago to recognise and reward high performing airlines and to act as an incentive for other airlines operating at the airport.
Only airlines achieving 95 percent departure track compliance - staying within tightly defined flight paths designed to limit the disturbance over local communities - and 80 percent continuous descent approach compliance - reducing the noise impact on the ground in certain areas under the approach path - are awarded the certificates.
The airport's director of sustainability, Neil Robinson, said: ‘As a responsible neighbour we have a duty to ensure that the impact of our operations are kept to a minimum. We set high standards and work closely with airlines to ensure that these are met and exceeded. I would like to congratulate the airlines and their pilots for going the extra mile and consistently achieving such high standards.’
