Airport axe 30 security staff
05.01.10
Up to thirty security workers at East Midlands Airport are to be laid off due to falling passenger numbers. The decision comes days after the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, announced plans to incfrease security at UK airports with the introduction of full body scanners.
G4S Aviation Services, which employs East Midlands Airport security staff, said less flights were operating from the airport, which, combined with lower passenger numbers on the flights that are operating, was the reasion for the decision. A spokesman for the airport said the reduction in staff will not affect passenger safety. The Unite union said the it was trying to ensure as few job losses as possible, but up to 30 could go.
