Emergency landing
03.09.08
An Eastern Airways plane declared an emergency and diverted to East Midlands Airport yesterday morning over fears a fire had broken out on board. The Jet Stream plane landed at about 09:25 after a smoke alert went off in a baggage compartment.
The plane, carrying 14 passengers, was on its way from Stansted to Manchester when the incident took place. Six fire engines were scrambled but the plane landed safely. After inspection by engineers, no traces of smoke or fire were found and a faulty light was thought to be behind the scare.
A replacement aircraft took the passengers to Manchester after a delay of less than two hours. An Eastern Airways spokesman said: ‘We apologise for the inconvenience. The safety of our passengers and crew is of paramount importance to us.’
