Airport celebrates record cargo year

East Midlands Airport has enjoyed its best ever year for cargo in its 45 year history in 2010. It handled 306,977 tonnes of flown cargo, up by 19,203 tonnes on 2009, confirming the status of the airport as the UK's premier pure freight hub. The growth has continued into 2011; in February it handled 23,116 tonnes of flown cargo, with over 1200 tonnes passing through the airport on a typical weekday.
The airport has a UK market share of almost 40% of pure freight carried in freighter aircraft, as distinct from bellyhold freight that travels beneath the cabin floor of large passenger aircraft from airports such as Heathrow. It is the main UK hub for DHL and UPS with daily connections to the USA (Cincinnati, New York and Philadelphia) and Middle / Far East (Bahrain, Shanghai and Seoul) as well as numerous destinations in the UK, Ireland and Europe. The airport is also an important 'spoke' for TNT, with nightly flights to and from Belfast and their main European hub in Liege.
East Midlands is also the UK's busiest airport for flown mail on dedicated aircraft, handling over 2 million first class items a night. It is also the UK's busiest airport for ad-hoc charters with over 200 flights handled a year from small Cessna's to the giant Antonov AN-124 and 225.
Bill Blanchard, the airport's Cargo manager, said: ‘East Midlands is a key part of the glue that links together global industry. As the UK comes out of recession, the air freight sector will play an important role in supporting UK businesses engaged in high value sectors of the economy. Already almost 40% of UK trade with non-EU countries by value is transported by air and East Midlands' prime location, its expertise and enviable reputation will continue to give it a competitive advantage.’
