Record 2008, but 2009 will be tough
01.02.09
2008 was the busiest year on record at East Midlands Airport with more than 5.6 million (5,624,117) passengers using the Airport, an increase of 3.87% over 2007 (5,414,395).
A spokesman for the hub said that it performed well during the first three quarters of 2008, benefiting from seven new destinations from airlines bmi, bmibaby, Manx2 and Ryanair. However, following over 30 months of consecutive growth, the airport saw a decline in passenger numbers during November and December 2008. This trend is anticipated to continue throughout 2009.
Penny Coates, Managing Director of East Midlands Airport, said ‘The 2008 passenger figures are a great achievement and are evidence that the efforts we have made to improve the airport experience for our customers have been successful.’
‘Despite the anticipated decline in passengers during these challenging times, we remain committed to improving the customer experience and our facilities, whilst managing a consolidated business with tight control.’
